Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, plantations. From sea-level - 900 m.

Vagrant to Grenada.

Subspecies
Several subspecies have been named but are all now lumped into nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
mellivora (Linnaeus, 1758) - Southern Mexico to Panama and Colombia, south to western Ecuador, south-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia, and east to Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas and Amazonian Brazil.
