Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, plantations. From sea-level - 900 m.

Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Vagrant to Grenada.

Population
Estimated population is 5,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Several subspecies have been named but are all now lumped into nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

mellivora (Linnaeus, 1758) - Southern Mexico to Panama and Colombia, south to western Ecuador, south-eastern Peru and northern Bolivia, and east to Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas and Amazonian Brazil.
flabellifera (Gould, 1846) - Tobago.
