Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Miombo Pied Barbet (Tricholaema frontata) and Acacia Pied Barbet (Tricholaema leucomelas), and all have in the past been considered conspecific. All respond strongly to playback of each other's song. Fairly closely related also to Spot-flanked Barbet (Tricholaema lacrymosa). Subspecies weakly differentiated. Birds from north-eastern Uganda east to Mt Kenya, described as subspecies musta, now considered inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
diademata (Heuglin, 1861) - South-eastern Sudan and north-central Ethiopia south to south-eastern Uganda and central Kenya.
massaica (Reichenow, 1887) - South-central Kenya south to south-western and central Tanzania.
