Subspecies
Species name sometimes misspelt mineaceus , and in past miniatus , but original spelling is miniaceus . Proposed subspecies dayak (Landak, Borneo) inseparable from malaccensis .
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
perlutum (Kloss, 1918) - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand.
malaccense Latham, 1790 - Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra (including Bangka and Belitung) and Borneo.
niasense (Büttikofer, 1897) - Nias I (off north-western Sumatra).
miniaceum Pennant, 1769 - Java.
