Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Picoides. Forms a superspecies with Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), Syrian Woodpecker (Dendrocopos syriacus), Sind Woodpecker (Dendrocopos assimilis) and Himalayan Woodpecker (Dendrocopos himalayensis). Has hybridized very occasionally with Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major). Birds of the Turkestan uplands, described as subspecies leptorhynchus, tend to be less white, but difference minor and not constant, and racial separation regarded as unwarranted. Named subspecies albipennis (south-eastern Turkmenia), jaxartensis (lower R Syr Darya) and korejevi (south-western Alatau Mts) likewise insufficiently differentiated.

No subspecies.
