(Oustalet, 1877)

Habitat
Marshes, pools, wide rivers and seasonal water-meadows in open, predominantly deciduous, dipterocarp lowland forest.

Range (Guide)

Cambodia (B), Laos (B), Thailand (E) (B), Vietnam (B) (NB).

Once widespread in Indochina, range now much reduced; apparently restricted to southern Viet Nam, though also suspected to occur in Kampuchea.

Population
Estimated population is 200 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Hunting, wetland drainage for agriculture, and deforestation are the main threats.

Habits
Singly, in pairs or small parties.

Food
Invertebrates, crustaceans, small amphibians and reptiles.

Voice
A repeated, loud, ringing 'a-leurk a-leurk' uttered at dawn and dusk.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
White-shouldered Ibis (Pseudibis davisoni) which is smaller and uniformly darker with whitish collar and white patch on inner wing-coverts.
