Subspecies
Closely related to Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus), with mixed pairing reported in the wild. Subspecies chersonesus of Blue-throated Barbet (Psilopogon asiaticus) somewhat intermediate between the two species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
incognitus (Hume, 1874) - Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
elbeli (Deignan, 1956) - North-eastern and eastern Thailand, northern Laos and northern Vietnam.
