Delacour & Jabouille, 1928

Habitat
Evergreen forest on slopes and plateaus. Also open areas. From 700 - 1,400 m.

Range (Guide)
Cambodia (B), Thailand (B).

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Habitat destruction through logging amd hunting are the main threats.

Habits
Forms groups of 5 - 6, although up to 30 individuals have been observed together.

Food
Includes ants, termites and other invertebrates.

Voice
Said to recall Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus), which gives a rapid series of loud 'brr' notes, leading up to separate series of 'wi-wu' couplets (with stressed first note).

Subspecies
Subspecies diversa might merit treatment as separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • diversa Delacour & Jabouille, 1928   -  South-eastern Thailand. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Siamese Partridge (Arborophila diversa).
  • cambodiana Delacour & Jabouille, 1928   -  South-western Kampuchea.
  • chandamonyi Eames, JC, Steinheimer & Bansok, 2002   -  Southwest Cambodia (Cardamom Mts.).


Similar Species
Nothing within its range, but the extralimital Bar-backed Partridge (Arborophila brunneopectus) has similar upperparts but is typically less heavily marked with black.
