Subspecies
Molecular-genetic evidence indicates that this genus may form a monophyletic group with Piranga and Habia, and that all three are more closely related to cardinals (Cardinalidae) than to true tanagers. Subspecies weakly differentiated.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
dugandi Meyer de Schauensee, 1948 - Pacific slope of Andes in Colombia (Risaralda south to Nariņo); extreme north-western Ecuador (El Placer, in Esmeraldas).
stolzmanni (Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1883) - Western slope of Andes in Ecuador from Pichincha south to El Oro.
