Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Song Wren (Cyphorhinus phaeocephalus) and Musician Wren (Cyphorhinus arada).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
dichrous Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1879 - Western and central Andes of Colombia (southern from Antioquia) south to northern Peru (San Martín). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Chestnut-breasted Wren (Cyphorhinus dichrous).
thoracicus Tschudi, 1844 - Peru (Huánuco south to Puno) and western Bolivia.
