Subspecies
Relationships of genus uncertain and it has been suggested that this species and Yellow-breasted Boatbill (Machaerirhynchus flaviventer) should be placed in a separate family of their own.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nigripectus Schlegel, 1871 - Mountains of Vogelkop, in north-western New Guinea.
saturatus Rothschild & Hartert, 1913 - Mountains of central New Guinea.
harterti van Oort, 1909 - Mountains of Huon Peninsula and south-eastern New Guinea.
