Subspecies
Proposed subspecies rara, described from single specimen among a collection of Mimic Honeyeater (Microptilotis analogus), subspecies flavida, from lowlands of Idenburg R (upper Mamberamo Basin, in northern New Guinea), considered of doubtful validity.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- mimikae (Ogilvie-Grant, 1911) - Southern slopes of Central Range and lowlands of south-western and south-central New Guinea from at least Mimika R and Snow Mts eastern (including along rivers Kapare, Wataikwa, Iwaka, Setekwa, Utakwa and Noord) to upper Fly R.
- bastille Diamond, 1967 - Southern slopes of eastern Highlands.
- granti Rand, 1936 - Southern slopes of mountains of south-eastern New Guinea from upper Angabunga R eastern at least to Sogeri Plateau, and in Hydrographer Range on northern watershed.
- rara Salomonsen, 1966 - Northern New Guinea (lowlands of upper Mamberamo River).
