Subspecies
Almost certainly most closely related to Bare-throated Bellbird (Procnias nudicollis), with which it shares several morphological characters in male (bare thigh patch, modification of outer primaries).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
carnobarba (Cuvier, 1816) - Extreme northern Colombia (northern end of Perijá Mts), north, south-eastern and extreme southern Venezuela, northern Brazil (Roraima) and adjacent western Guyana. Also Trinidad.
averano (Hermann, 1783) - North-eastern Brazil (southern Maranhío and northern Ceará south to Alagoas).
