Subspecies
Subspecies pucherani has been considered by some to be approaching the species threshold. Subspecies igneus doubtfully separable from nominate. Flame-rumped Sapphire (Hylocharis pyropygia) is probably a hybrid of present species and White-chinned Sapphire (Hylocharis cyanus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
pucherani (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1848) - Eastern Brazil (Maranhío and Ceará south to Paraná).
aureoventris (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838) - Bolivia, Paraguay and west-central Brazil (Mato Grosso).
igneus Gould, 1861 - North-western Argentina (Jujuy and Chaco south to Mendoza and San Luis).
berlepschi Pinto, 1938 - Southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay to north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Entre Rios, Corrientes, Buenos Aires).
lucidus (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838) - Eastern Bolivia to Paraguay and w-central Brazil (Mato Grosso).
