Subspecies
Similar to Pale-bellied Hermit (Phaethornis anthophilus), both species apparently lacking close relatives. Includes "Phaethornis nigrirostris", based on a unique specimen of nominate subspecies with uniformly black bill.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

paraguayensis Bertoni, M & Bertoni, AW, 1901 - Eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
eurynome (Lesson, 1832) - South-eastern Brazil (Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul).
