Subspecies
Subspecies campestroides often considered a separate species, but hybridizes with nominate in Paraguay, and probably occasionally elsewhere, and the two appear to intergrade. Birds from north-eastern Brazil, described as subspecies chrysosternus, considered indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
campestris (Vieillot, 1818) - Southern Surinam and north-central Brazil (near Santarem); eastern Brazil (Maranhío south to Santa Catarina), northern and eastern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz) and central Paraguay.
campestroides (Malherbe, 1849) - Central and southern Paraguay, south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay to north-eastern and eastern Argentina (south to eastern Río Negro). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pampas Flicker (Colaptes campestroides).
