Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dot-fronted Woodpecker (Veniliornis frontalis) and the two sometimes hybridize, and have occasionally been considered conspecific. Subspecies tend to intergrade. Birds from extreme western French Guiana described as subspecies saturatus and those from eastern Brazil (northern Goiás, western Bahia) as transfluvialis, but appear to be no more than intergrades.
