Reported to be somewhat larger than King Island Emu (Dromaius minor) but smaller than Common Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae).

Status EX
Extinct. Reason for extinction unknown, but destruction of habitat by fire as well as hunting by settlers may have been contributing factors.

Probably leaves, grasses, fruits and flowers of native plants, and insects.
Subspecies
Dromaius novaehollandiae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Common Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae), King Island Emu (Dromaius minor) and Kangaroo Island Emu (Dromaius baudinianus) following Christidis and Boles (1994).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Common Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae).
