Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, dry savanna.

Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda.

Vagrant to Kenya.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Slender-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus clarus) and Mozambique Nightjar (Caprimulgus fossii), and all have frequently been separated in genus Scotornis. Dark, dull-coloured birds from Sierra Leone to southern Nigeria sometimes treated as separate subspecies leonini, but possibly intermediate between nominate and subspecies sclateri, or variant of latter.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • climacurus Vieillot, 1825   -  Mauritania east to western Ethiopia (except White Nile in southern Sudan) and south to northern and south-eastern Zaire.
  • sclateri (Bates, 1927)   -  Humid belt of western Africa (boundaries between subspecies unclear).
  • nigricans (Salvadori, 1868)   -  White Nile in Sudan, from Kosti south to Shambe and L Nyubor. Also along Bahr el Zeraf and Sobat R.
