Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Hartlaub's Bustard (Lissotis hartlaubii).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanogaster (Rüppell, 1835) - Africa south of Sahel south to R Zambezi and southern Angola; absent from regions of heavy forest and from most of Horn of Africa.
notophila Oberholser, 1905 - Zimbabwe and Mozambique south of R Zambezi to extreme eastern South Africa and Swaziland.
