Subspecies
Population from Senegal, described as subspecies fortis, now included in torquata. Proposed subspecies prenticei, from southern Sudan, north-eastern Zaire and Uganda, inseparable from nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
torquata Swainson, 1837 - Senegal east to south-western Mali and south to northern Guinea.
forbesi Sharpe, 1892 - Sierra Leone east to southern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and south-western Cameroon.
dryas Hartlaub, 1854 - Príncipe I and, at least formerly, Sío Tomé I.
malimbica (Shaw, 1811) - Southern Cameroon east to south-western Sudan, western Uganda and north-western Tanzania, and south to northern Angola and north-western Zambia; probably this subspecies in south-western Ethiopia.
