Subspecies
Sometimes separated, along with Magenta-throated Woodstar (Calliphlox bryantae) and Purple-throated Woodstar (Calliphlox mitchellii), in genus Philodice. In the past separated in Nesophlox, alone or occasionally with Magenta-throated Woodstar (Calliphlox bryantae).
Proposed subspecies salita, from Caicos Is, inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- evelynae (Bourcier, 1847) - Bahamas (except Inagua).
- lyrura (Gould, 1869) - Inagua. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lyre-tailed Hummingbird (Nesophlox lyrura).
