Eastern Canada from Manitoba to Newfoundland, south to eastern USA as far southern as North Carolina.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos ), Meller's Duck (Anas melleri ) and Yellow-billed Duck (Anas undulata ). Sometimes considered a subspecies of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos ), with which frequently interbreeds.
