Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, rural gardens, pastureland, arable land.
Angola, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Lesotho.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Nest
Open cup composed of thin stems and other plant material, lined with plant down, located in a leafy bush or a tree.
Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Northern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra donaldsoni ) and Southern Grosbeak-canary (Crithagra buchanani ).
Proposed subspecies loveridgei (described from Lumbo, in north-eastern Mozambique) is synonymized with sharpii , and languens (from Manhica, in southern Mozambique) with wilsoni .
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
sharpii (Neumann, 1900) - Central, south-western and eastern Angola, north-eastern and south-eastern DRCongo east to west-central and southern Kenya, north-eastern and southern Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and northern and central Mozambique.
wilsoni Roberts, 1936 - Southern Mozambique, Swaziland and eastern South Africa (eastern Limpopo south to KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Cape).
sulphurata (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern South Africa (southern western Cape and western eastern Cape).
