Subspecies
Closely allied to Black-backed Cisticola (Cisticola eximius) and Dambo Cisticola (Cisticola dambo). Distinctively streaked nominate subspecies sometimes regarded as an incipient species, separate from other subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

bulubulu Lynes, 1931 - Central Angola.
anselli White, CMN, 1960 - Eastern Angola and adjacent extreme western Zambia.
major (Roberts, 1913) - Plateau of eastern South Africa.
marleyi (Roberts, 1932) - Southern Mozambique and eastern South Africa (north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal south to St Lucia).
textrix (Vieillot, 1817) - South-western South Africa (east to Port Elizabeth).
