Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, pastureland. To 600 m.

Range (Guide)

Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland.

Eastern and southern South Africa, Lesotho and southern Mozambique.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

explorator (Vieillot, 1818) - Southern.
tenebriformis Clancey, 1952 - Swaziland (Lebombo Mts.). Winters north to southern Mozambique.
