Mixed, dry woodland at low altitudes. Avoids semi-arid thornbelt areas. From sea-level - 4,000 m.

Senegal east to Ethiopia (including Dahlak Archipelago) and Somalia, then south to Namibia and northern South Africa.

Estimated population is 7,000 - 12,500 (2010) and decreasing.
