Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- molybdophanes Clancey, 1964 - North-eastern Angola through southern Zaire, Zambia and northern Malawi to southern Tanzania and adjacent areas of northern Mozambique.
- pallidiceps Neumann, 1899 - Western Angola south to Namibia, extending seasonally to western Botswana.
- bechuanae Roberts, 1932 - Southern and south-eastern Angola and north-eastern Namibia through Botswana and the Caprivi Strip to south-western Zambia, the Zimbabwe Plateau, and northern and western Transvaal.
- concolor (Smith, 1833) - Southern Malawi and northern Mozambique south to eastern Transvaal, eastern Swaziland and eastern Zululand.
