Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). Formerly considered conspecific with Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). Several subspecies have been described, including tephria (equator to R Save in Mozambique) and heuglini (Dire Daoua in Ethiopia), but regional variations in wing length and bill depth are slight and seem insufficient to warrant racial separation.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • heuglini Laubmann, 1925   -  Ethiopia.
  • semitorquata Swainson, 1823   -  Ethiopia; Angola to Tanzania, south to Mozambique and southern South Africa.
  • tephria Clancey, 1951   -  Angola to Tanzania and Mozambique.
