by Dries Van de Loock from Masuku Lodge, Choma, Southern, Zambia (call)

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-fronted Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus pusillus), overlapping very narrowly in Ethiopia and eastern South Africa and apparently not hybridizing. Both also closely related to Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus bilineatus) and Yellow-throated Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus subsulphureus), and perhaps fairly close to Red-rumped Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus atroflavus).

Proposed subspecies schubotzi (west-central Niger to south-western Sudan), zedlitzi (eastern Sudan) and centralis (north-eastern Zaire and Uganda) regarded as synonyms of chrysoconus; schoanus (central Ethiopia) included in xanthostictus; and rhodesiae (south-western Zaire to Malawi) and mayri (southern Zaire to north-eastern Angola) in extoni.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • chrysoconus (Temminck, 1832)   -  South-western Mauritania and Senegal east to north-western Ethiopia, south to northern edge of forest in central Cameroon, northern and north-eastern Zaire, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
  • xanthostictus (Blundell & Lovat, 1899)   -  Highlands of central and southern Ethiopia.
  • extoni (Layard, EL, 1871)   -  Angola and southern Zaire east to southern Tanzania, south to north-central Namibia, northern Botswana, Transvaal and southern Mozambique.
