Indonesia (B) (NB).

Arfak Mts, on Vogelkop Peninsula of north-western New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010) and stable.

Status VU
Habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture is the main threat.

A high-pitched, thin 'ts ts ts...'.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Previously thought, on biogeographical grounds, to form a species pair with Grey-headed Mannikin (Lonchura caniceps). Recent study of mitochondrial phylogeny indicates closer relationship with White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja) and Pale-headed Munia (Lonchura pallida), the three being similar also in plumage.
