Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 3,000 m, occasionally up to 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

South-western Colombia (Nariño) southern in Andes (on both slope in central Ecuador) to northern Peru (northern Piura and north-western Cajamarca).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Forms a monophyletic group with Black-collared Jay (Cyanolyca armillata) and White-collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus). All formerly considered conspecific, but differ in morphology and probably voice.
