Subspecies
Subspecies differ vocally from each other, and may represent three separate species, with subspecies alticola particularly distinctive. In addition, the taxon saltuensis, currently treated as a subspecies of Rufous Antpitta (Grallaria rufula), may possibly be better placed with this species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
alticola Todd, 1919 - Eastern Andes of Colombia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria alticola).
quitensis Lesson, 1844 - Central Andes of Colombia south to extreme northern Peru.
atuensis Carriker, 1933 - Central Andes of northern Peru in southern Amazonas and eastern La Libertad. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Southern Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria atuensis).
