Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level to 1,500 m.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Relationships uncertain; probably closely related to New Britain Boobook (Ninox odiosa). Subspecific divisions considered dubious by some, although most subspecies appear fairly well defined. Further study required.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • eichhorni (Hartert, 1929)   -  Buka, Bougainville and Choiseul.
  • jacquinoti (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Ysabel and St George.
  • granti Sharpe, 1888   -  Guadalcanal. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Guadalcanal Boobook (Ninox granti).
  • mono Mayr, 1935   -  Mono I.
  • floridae Mayr, 1935   -  Florida I.
  • malaitae Mayr, 1931   -  Malaita I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Malaita Boobook (Ninox malaitae).
  • roseoaxillaris (Hartert, 1929)   -  Bauro and San Cristobal. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Makira Boobook (Ninox roseoaxillaris).
