Subspecies
Heliangelus exortis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Tourmaline Sunangel (Heliangelus exortis) and Little Sunangel (Heliangelus micraster) following SACC (2005).
Closely related to Little Sunangel (Heliangelus micraster) and often regarded as conspecific. Coloration of throat region in female is subject to much variation but most patterns of variation appear irregular and are not correlated with distribution, so no subspecies can be determined.
