South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Esp�rito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Parana).

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and fragmentation is the main threat.

Voice
A complex series of ascending whistles mixed with raspy notes, often delivered in groups. Also a 'wheet' call.

Subspecies
Close to Brachygalba, particularly Brown Jacamar (Brachygalba lugubris), but isolated by foot morphology, elongated head feathers and gregarious behaviour.
