Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a separate genus Tripsurus, along with Black-cheeked Woodpecker (Melanerpes pucherani), Golden-naped Woodpecker (Melanerpes chrysauchen) and Yellow-tufted Woodpecker (Melanerpes cruentatus). Forms a superspecies with Yellow-tufted Woodpecker (Melanerpes cruentatus), sometimes also including first two. Birds from eastern and south of range, generally much darker below than north-western populations, are sometimes separated as subspecies rubriventris, but considerable variation exists throughout entire range. Recognition of geographical subspecies considered unwarranted.
