Bangladesh, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- hypoleucos (Blyth, 1844) - North-eastern Indian states, eastern Bangladesh and northern and western Myanmar.
- tickelli Hume, 1877 - Southern China (southern Yunnan, Guangxi), northern Indochina, southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim), Thailand and south-western Cambodia.
- hainanus Rothschild, 1903 - Hainan I.
- brevirostris Robinson & Kloss, 1919 - Southern Indochina.
- wrayi Sharpe, 1887 - Extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.
