Arremon taciturnus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus) and Half-collared Sparrow (Arremon semitorquatus) following SACC (2005). The genus Arremon has been expanded following SACC (2007) to include the genera Arremon, Buarremon and Lysurus.
Until recently considered conspecific with Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus). In recent study found to be parapatric with latter, and no intermediate specimens or evidence of gene flow.
