Breeds in south-western USA (from Arizona and south-western New Mexico) southern in north-western Mexico to southern Durango. Winters from Sinaloa and Durango south through highlands of Mexico and Guatemala to western Honduras and northern El Salvador.

Genus thought by some authors to be closely related to and perhaps better subsumed in Wilsonia. Others consider it closer to Ergaticus. Birds from Guatemala proposed as a geographical subspecies, bella, but this generally considered not tenable.
