Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,100 m.
Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Some similarities with Aviceda .
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
fasciatus Lawrence, 1869 - Eastern Mexico (Oaxaca and Veracruz) to western Colombia and western Ecuador.
bidentatus (Latham, 1790) - Eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador through Amazonia to eastern Bolivia (Beni) and south-eastern Brazil; Trinidad.
