Subspecies
Formerly placed in a separate genus, Perissotriccus, along with Black-capped Pygmy-tyrant (Myiornis atricapillus). The two form a superspecies and were previously treated by many authors as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
miserabilis (Chubb, C, 1919) - Venezuela (Carabobo, Mérida, Táchira, Barinas, northern Amazonas, Bolívar), Trinidad, the Guianas, eastern Colombia (Meta) and northern Brazil (Amapá).
ecaudatus (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Amazon Basin of eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, Brazil (from Amazonas east to Pará) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
