Subspecies
May form superspecies with Greater Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes melambrotus), but are widely sympatric. Formerly called Cathartes urubitinga or Cathartes urubutinga.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
burrovianus Cassin, 1845 - Central America south to central Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
urubutinga Pelzeln, 1861 - Southern America to Argentina and Brazil (east of the Andes).
