Subspecies
May form superspecies with Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima). Birds of Tierra del Fuego sometimes awarded separate subspecies, fuegiensis. Possible subspecies azarae normally included within nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chimango (Vieillot, 1816) - Northern and central Chile and northern and central Argentina through Paraguay to Uruguay and adjacent Brazil.
temucoensis Sclater, WL, 1918 - Southern Chile (from near Concepción) and southern Argentina (from R Chubut) south to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn.
