Habitat
Very humid lowland evergreen forest and edge, favouring treefalls and river edges, but also in adjacent secondary forest. From sea-level - 900 m.
Chocó region of western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction through intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing, mining and coca and palm cultivation is the main threat.

Subspecies
Nyctiphrynus ocellatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Ocellated Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus ocellatus) and Choco Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus rosenbergi) following SACC (2005).
Formerly considered conspecific with Ocellated Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus ocellatus), but differs vocally and may not even be closely related.
