Subspecies
Molecular evidence suggests that genus is closely related to Oryzoborus, which should perhaps be subsumed within it. Further, that both genera should be placed in the tanager family (Thraupidae). Affinities of this species not clearly understood. Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates close relationship to Bolivian populations of Rusty-collared Seedeater (Sporophila collaris), but corroboration required. Bolivian subspecies bicolor quite different in appearance from others, and may warrant treatment as a separate species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • mexianae Hellmayr, 1912   -  Southern Suriname (Sipaliwini) and southern Amapá and north-eastern Pará (Mexiana I), at mouth of R Amazon, in Brazil.
  • bicolor (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Extreme south-eastern Peru (Puno) and northern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Beni and western and eastern Santa Cruz).
  • leucoptera (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Central and southern Brazil (Goiás and Minas Gerais south to Mato Grosso) south through Paraguay to northern Argentina (Formosa, Chaco and Santa Fe).
  • cinereola (Temminck, 1820)   -  Eastern Brazil (central Maranhío east to Paraíba, south to Rio de Janeiro).
