Subspecies
Morphological, vocal and molecular studies indicate that, with exception of Narrow-billed Antwren (Formicivora iheringi), all species placed in current genus form a well-defined group. According to recent extensive morphological and vocal study, present species is closest to White-fringed Antwren (Formicivora grisea) and Parana Antwren (Formicivora acutirostris). Close relationship to former also supported by genetic study. Plumage variation occurs within subspecies as currently defined, and nominate subspecies and chapmani possibly intergrade. Also, possible regional variation in vocal repertoires. Further study is needed.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • urubambae Zimmer, JT, 1932   -  Eastern Peru (locally on eastern foothills of Andes in San Martín and Cuzco).
  • chapmani Cherrie, 1916   -  Southern Surinam and east-central Brazil (locally in Amapá, Pará, Maranhío and Piauí).
  • rufa (Wied, 1831)   -  South-central and eastern Brazil (southern Amazonas and extreme eastern Acre east to central Mato Grosso and Goiás, and from coastal Pernambuco, south to Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Sío Paulo) south to extreme south-eastern Peru (extreme eastern Madre de Dios), eastern Bolivia (Beni, La Paz, north-eastern Cochabamba, Santa Cruz), and central and north-eastern Paraguay (locally along R Paraguay and in northern Amambay).
