Subspecies
Relationships within genus unclear, pending completion of major genetic study. Additional work needed in order to clarify taxonomic limits of subspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
platyrhynchos (Gmelin, 1788) - Eastern Colombia (eastern Guainía and eastern Vaupés, probably also eastern Vichada), southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas, and northern Amazonian Brazil (upper R Negro east to R Branco and northern Pará).
senex Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1880 - Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, extreme western Brazil (R Juruá) and northern Bolivia (south to La Paz, south-western Beni, and north-eastern Santa Cruz).
nattereri Hartert & Hellmayr, 1902 - South-central Amazonian Brazil, from lower R Purús east to upper R Madeira and R Jiparaná (eastern Amazonas).
amazonicus von Berlepsch, 1912 - Eastern Amazonian Brazil south of Amazon, from left bank of R Tapajós east to northern Maranhío.
