Relationships within genus uncertain, pending completion of major genetic study. Geographical boundaries of subspecies poorly differentiated. Subspecies klagesi possibly not a valid taxon, sometimes merged with sclateri. Further study is required.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
klagesi (Ridgway, 1906) - Central and eastern Venezuela (northern Amazonas, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro).
poliocephalus (Taczanowski, 1884) - South-western Venezuela (southern Amazonas), eastern and south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil (western Amazonas east to right bank of lower R Negro and Tefé).
sclateri (Hellmayr, 1903) - The Guianas through eastern Amazonian Brazil to northern and central Bolivia. Also isolated population in coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco south to Espírito Santo).
