Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
nigra (Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847) - Northern Mexico (Sinaloa and Tamaulipas) south to zone of Panama Canal.
balzarensis Sclater, WL, 1918 - Panama east of canal zone on Pacific slope to western Colombia, western Ecuador and north-western Peru (Lambayeque).
caerulescens (Vieillot, 1817) - Eastern slope of Colombia and Ecuador to the Guianas and Amazonian Peru and Brazil.
gracilis (Temminck, 1821) - North-eastern Brazil, from Maranhão, Ceará and Piauí to central Goiás and Bahia.
flexipes Peters, JL, 1935 - Southern Brazil (Minas Gerais, southern Goiás and Mato Grosso) and Bolivia through Chaco of Paraguay, to north-central Argentina (south to La Rioja, Córdoba and Buenos Aires) and Uruguay.
