Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Scaly-breasted Woodpecker (Celeus grammicus ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
undatus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Eastern Venezuela (eastern Sucre south to eastern Bolivar), the Guianas, and north-eastern Brazil north of Amazon (western from middle and lower R Negro).
amacurensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1950 - Delta Amacuro (north-eastern Venezuela).
multifasciatus (Natterer & Malherbe, 1845) - North-eastern Brazil south of Amazon, from central Pará east to lower R Tocantins and north-western Maranhío border.
